A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this accident,” affirmed the national leader.
The president confirmed that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term finished the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his government's strategic agenda for the southern region.
Another massive rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both railway systems was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in public works. They were built at an accelerated rate, defying predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously raised significant apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an previous collision this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a major opposition party demanded an immediate halt in the building and running of all similar projects.
This stoppage was requested while awaiting a thorough technical review. The party declared that the tragedy "requires swift accountability."
In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in total compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and management of these vital undertakings.
