Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements from skipper Ben Stokes about the dressing room not being "weak men".

The all-rounder made those words in several conversations in the wake of his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes series against the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

But, after Crawley made 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "weak men" observation after his side were beaten in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The team afterwards took a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he revealed his players had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley asserted the messaging from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their prior three years in charge.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," noted Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of something special entering this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

The opener's dismissal on day four came during a decisive triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional target of 435.

This means, Australia require just four more wickets on the final day to move to an insurmountable three-nil lead with three matches played.

Defeat will extend the English team's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes defeat.

This series will be completed in just eleven days of play – with England fell the first two Tests in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," said the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a formidable team. It was always going to be hard touring here to face them. They were the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's innings in Adelaide probably answers questions about his short-term future in the side, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in England's second innings on Saturday, adding to his modest returns against the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and averages just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

However, the opener insisted any suggestion Pope is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is talk externally. There's no discussion like that regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley finished.
