Patients Stopping Slimming Medications Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that people who come off new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a prominent health publication shows that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"People using such treatments must be aware of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a return to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.

Weighing Approaches

The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with other pills.

The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually have a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Experts propose the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the amplified weight return.

These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Disease?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

People who have discontinued the medication describe a intense resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," said a patient.

The struggle is compounded if patients have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined behavioural management.
