Senate Passes Legislation to Disclose Jeffrey Epstein Files

The upper chamber of Congress on Tuesday passed without delay to a bill that will force the release of investigative files concerning the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, following a overwhelming vote in the lower house and a shift by Donald Trump and his Republican allies. The White House changed course after months of trying to block the cross-party initiative involving a controversy that has plagued the president since his comeback to the White House.

Swift Approval in Congress

The Senate acted by consensus, which needs acceptance from each senator but does not require a individual voting process, speeding up the process. Earlier that day, the House passed by a huge margin the bill on a massive majority.

Citizens have waited long enough. Jeffrey Epstein’s victims have suffered long enough,” the Senate Democratic leader declared in a Senate remarks on Tuesday, before requesting the chamber to adopt it by consent. “Uncover the facts. Allow openness to prevail.”

Presidential Signature

The measure next goes to Trump for his endorsement. He indicated on Monday that he would approve the bill.

Though the president has for an extended period rejected the outcry over the official management of the Epstein case as a “political stunt”, he signalled his support for the House bill over the past few days, and stated he would approve it if it reaches his desk.

Support and Opposition

The Democratic party, along with those affected and their supporters who were present in a viewing area, broke into applause after the bill was passed. The only opposition came from a GOP representative, who said he worried the measure would make public specific data of witnesses, those under scrutiny and others involved in the investigation.
