Wimbledon Adopts Video Review System in 2025.

Wimbledon court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in implementing replay technology.

Replay systems will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players are granted the right to challenge certain decisions from the chair umpire, echoing the protocol already in use at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development follows just a year after the AELTC implemented ELC, which terminated the 147-year role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to review specific decisions, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a player can ask for.

A Recent Example

An illustrative example occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined Draper was responsible for interference, granting the rally to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further change at The Championships this year will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves instances where fans have sometimes been unsure if a ball was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
